Hans Leonhard Schäufelein, c. 1535

This deck started out as a normal 48-card German-style deck. An addition containing aces and queens were made by Anton Woensam. With this the 56-card structure becomes the same as that of the Ambraser Hofjagdspiel, similar to the suit cards of tarot decks.

A 52-card version also exists. This adds aces, and shuffles around some illustrations from one card to another. New illustrations appear on the aces of hearts and bells, the two of leaves and the ten of hearts. The original illustration from the latter is moved to the three of acorns, which in turn has its illustration moved to the ace of leaves. The one on the two of leaves is moved to the ace of acorns.

The tens are not banner tens, but flags on the tens of hearts and bells may reflect this tradition.

These images of a 56-card version with modern colouring are used (in higher resolution, of course) for printing custom decks by the Austrian firm Business-Werbung GmbH / Herz Ober.
